Evergreen Marine Corp ready to invest ~$2.75 billion in 11 mega-size H2 container ships
News to watch closely…
Tata Steel Nederland and ECOLOG are collaborating on a liquid hydrogen and CO2 corridor between Norway and Amsterdam
Beyond Aero raises $20 million in a Series A funding round led by Giant Ventures and Bpifrance, bringing its total capital to $44 million
France’s HRS announces plans to install 27 high-capacity stations across Europe by the end of the year
Germany greenlights a €19 billion hydrogen network, aiming to establish a 9,040-kilometer network by 2032. About 60% of the network will rely on existing gas pipelines, with the remainder being newly constructed. The first pipes will operate as of next year.
TotalEnergies is exploring the possibility of a renewable energy project in Morocco to produce hydrogen and ammonia for export to Europe. Announced during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Morocco, the project involves building 1 gigawatt of wind and solar farms in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, located in the South of the country. The renewable energy will be harnessed to extract hydrogen from desalinated seawater, and then to produce 200,000 metric tons of ammonia each year for export to Europe.
Tata Steel Nederland and Greek CO2 shipping firm ECOLOG are working on a project that can help decarbonize the steel industry. The companies have partnered with Norway’s Gen2 Energy and the Port of Amsterdam to explore the feasibility of a liquid hydrogen import corridor from Norway to the Netherlands. Hydrogen will be produced from hydropower in Norway, liquified, and transported via specialized vessels to Amsterdam, where it will be converted back to gas for distribution. Additionally, the partners plan to establish a liquid CO2 export corridor, capturing CO2 from Tata Steel and other companies for storage in Norway.
Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corp is planning to invest over $2.75 billion in a new order for 11 mega-size container ships that can run on clean hydrogen-based methanol. These vessels will have a capacity of 24,000 TEU each and will be equipped with methanol dual-fuel technology as part of Evergreen's decarbonization strategy. The company has approached at least six shipyards to submit tenders for this project, reflecting a growing trend towards alternative fuel solutions in the shipping industry.

Franco-American company Beyond Aero raised $20 million in a Series A funding round led by Giant Ventures and Bpifrance, bringing its total capital to $44 million. The funding will support the development of the first hydrogen-powered electric business aircraft, designed to carry 6-8 passengers over 800 nautical miles using fuel cells.

Heavy Duty
France’s Hydrogen-Refueling-Solutions (HRS) marks a strategic milestone in advancing hydrogen mobility in Europe. Notably in the past month, the French designer and manufacturer did a simultaneous installation of four hydrogen stations in its home country, each with a capacity of 1 tonne per day, within just five months. The company aims to install 27 high-capacity stations across the continent by the end of 2024.
Land transportation
Toyota Motor Corp. plans for public road tests of a hydrogen-electric hybrid van in Australia by the spring of 2025. The vehicle combines a hydrogen engine with an electric motor, extending its range by 20% to 250 kilometers compared to running solely on hydrogen.

California’s San Mateo County Transit (SamTrans) places largest hydrogen bus order in North America. The Canadian bus manufacturer New Flyer received an order from SamTrans in California, for 108 zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-electric Xcelsior CHARGE FC 40 ft transit buses. SamTrans, which operates in the San Francisco Bay area, is expanding its network and aims to transition to a zero-emission fleet by 2040, supported by federal and local funding.
Railway
Chile’s Ferrocarril de Antofagasta (FCAB) launched South America’s first hydrogen-powered train, set to operate on the Antofagasta-Bolivia railway network in the Northern Chile. The train, featuring a 1MW fuel cell, a 35MPa hydrogen system, and a high-capacity battery, was manufactured by CRRC Qishuyan in China.
